Dynamic Route Information Panels DRIPs

Market

Recently, a large number of dynamic route information panels (DRIPs) were delivered to the municipality of Rotterdam. These 3-line text displays are hung at strategic locations in the city to ensure a better flow of city traffic. Current traffic information with expected travel times is displayed on the panels, so that motorists can adjust their route accordingly in good time.

Desired behavior

The traffic control room of the municipality of Rotterdam continuously measures the condition of the roads in the city and intervenes where necessary. For each situation, it has been determined which behavior of the road user is desirable in order to promote traffic flow in the city. To achieve that desired behavior, traffic messages are communicated to the road user by means of the city DRIPs. Predetermined scenarios are often used for this, in which, among other things, it has already been determined what alternative routes are and what information is shown on the displays.

City DRIPs

The so-called city DRIPs are smaller than the well-known (roadside) DRIPs. Yet these smaller displays show the same amount of information to the road user. This is because the city DRIPs have a different size and proportion than a (roadside) DRIP. These city DRIPs are also provided with a smaller pixel distance. Due to the compact design, the displays are well suited for use in the city and this design seems to become the new standard within urban areas.
